EXCERPT:

CHAPTER ONE

The sun struggled to shine through the clouds, and it was one of those days destined to be miserable. Not just because of the weather, but because of the girl sobbing out her heartbreak on a sterile hospital bed, the sheets pulled up around her shoulders as she buried her face in the flat and lumpy pillow.

Vereint clenched his hands together on the handles of the two shopping bags he held. It took all of his willpower to keep from running into the room and scooping her into his arms. Instead, he stood in the hallway and watched through the window as she mourned the loss of her parents. Behind and to the left of him, he could hear Warrick talking to the nurse and the social worker, and Vereint was sure everything was just about worked out.

They were going to take that little girl home and give her a family and make sure she grew up knowing that she was loved. He didn't think they could ever erase the loss of her parents, but they would try their best to make her realize that she still had a whole life to live and they would be there for her.

Rumor was the guy was alone, but she wasn't going to trust her life to what a witness didn't know. Just because she was much more resilient than a normal human didn't mean she was invulnerable. Bullets still stung when they hit her bare skin, and she wasn't sure she would survive a high-powered rifle round.

There were some young superheroes that believed nothing bad could ever happen to them. But she was fully aware of her own mortality. Of the terrible things that could be done to her by the criminals she fought.

Melissa figured there would come a point when she was too slow on the return swing, and she'd either be terribly wounded or dead. Either way, she would be out of a job.

It was called a Superhero Send-Off. It usually heralded the end of a career. Because when the baddies smelled blood, they moved in. Killing capes for fun and profit was an ever growing gig.

I've been trying to write, but I've probably only written 1000 words in the past several hours. It's kind of aggravating, because I keep grinding away, trying to write. It's not going well.

I was kind of happy because my brother let me use his bluetooth dongle (dongle!) and I've been able to use my new keyboard. It's been working great and I've been having a lot of fun lounging on the couch typing from clear across the room. It's like magic, or technology. Someday I plan to have a big screen mounted on my bedroom wall and I'll do all my writing from my bed, where I'll gain several hundred pounds because for some reason I can't stop eating! Seriously, I've been eating the heck out of some food, and even though I keep telling myself to stop, I've been getting hit with craving on top of craving.

I'm going to have to do some exercising tomorrow or I'm not going to be able to fit into my pants anymore, and how awful is that.

-I edited some on Allies & Enemies, and it's coming along great. Here, have an excerpt: rated Teen+ for language (the F-word, and the B-word.)

-I've also been working on Paradigm Shift and there will be updates.

Ugh, so I'm editing this monster and right smack in the middle is a 10,000+ word chapter, just looming over me like a hungry beast.

I'm tempted to split it, but that leaves me with an odd number of chapters and doesn't follow what I've done with the rest of the chapters. I.e., each chapter is a self-contained moment. Splitting this one kind of ruins the whole theme I've got going. But 10,000 words? That's 40 ms pages. That's someone hitting that chapter and being like, "This thing goes on forever!"

Blargh. I'll leave it and let my editor decide whether I should split it or not.

130,000+ word novel. Percentage edited: 2%
