Sometimes Ewing wondered if they had invited a devil into their midst. Because there wasn't a doubt in his mind that Charlemagne was possessed. And the devil was named Faizel. Charlemagne's darling love. The mysterious vampire that had appeared from nowhere to steal Charlemagne's heart and rearrange the natural order of the world.

Ewing personally thought of Faizel as a booty call gone wrong, though he would never say it aloud. He valued his life too much.

Charlemagne wanted to keep Faizel secret, and Ewing was willing to go along with it. Because honestly, how could he even explain someone like Faizel? The guy scared the ever living fuck out of him, and that was no lie.

"Are you certain this is how you want to do things?" Deacon asked in her "I'm a complete hard as nails Law Officer" voice.

Ewing fought to keep still where he knelt on the hardwood floor along with the other low level vampires. It was pretty boring, but he wasn't one to battle the status quo. He didn't want to get tortured and killed.Read more... )

Pain. It was the first sensation Dylan knew upon regaining consciousness. His face throbbed in time with his heartbeat and it took him a few precious seconds to reorient himself.

He'd had Hanson's hands--surprisingly large and strong--wrapped around his neck, powerful thumbs digging in to stop the blood flow to his brain. Then everything had gone blank and here he was, his mind seemingly having decided to reset itself.Read more... )

The sounds of fighting drew closer and away from the water tank. Gregor couldn't tell what was going on, but it sounded worrisome.

Then there was a sharp pain in his shoulder, sudden and deep. He bit back his shocked cry and was glad when the blade was swiftly withdrawn. There was the sound of water gurgling out through the hole in the water tank.Read more... )

Dylan breathed in through his nose and forced his thoughts to clarity. There was no time for daydreaming. Not when he was needed to enact the Law.

"Come on," he whispered. The recyclers should cover any sound they made, but it was better not to test it.

He had the Law Officers position themselves in the rafters. They'd have a clear shot once he got Hanson out in the open

He'd keep his eyes open for more shock grenades. He wouldn't put it past Hanson to have booby-trapped the Farm.Read more... )

Summary: Gregor has been living as a Two for most of his life, but it's a lie. He's really a Third. And now he's been found out and pulled into the lives of one of the great Families.

"I am a member of the Family," Park stated as though it was everyday kind of news, and to him it probably was. Gregor was shocked enough for two people. "The Family requested that I assess you for the possibility of merging your genome with the Duadenora."

"And I passed?" Gregor hadn't meant to ask, but the words had slipped out.

Park looked amused. "So far."

He could imagine the mockery when the Valkyries came to collect his body, dead of a broken neck after all his years of battle. The report to his Family would be respectful, but behind the scenes at the Morgue there would be laughter and speculation about the Prime that died so ignobly. They were a largely irreverent group, their sole purpose to ensure that the dead stayed dead and that there was never a repeat of the Phage Virus.

The first inkling he had that he'd fallen asleep was the startled jerk that went through him at the loud crash and the echo of footsteps outside the tank. There were people in the fishery. He wasn't alone.

Gregor held perfectly still and strained to listen for any sound. It could be Duadenora out there, cleaning up after the attack. Or it could be Hanson's Acolytes hunting for new victims after killing everyone else.Read more... )

He was a little regretful there were no hidden bottles of water, but it had been a far-fetched hope in the first place. There were vacuum packaged clothing and trinkets, keepsakes that he began to suspect had come from dead Family members. CHAPTER NINETEEN

Gregor was sweating and trembling with effort by the time he climbed out through the vent of what looked like a store room. There were metal racks pressed against the walls holding stacks of opaque plasticene bins marked with black and red labels that the dim blue glow of the safety lighting made impossible to read.

He scrubbed his face with his sleeve, then cursed and pulled off his formal jacket, dropping it on the floor. He was covered in dust and stunk of fear.Read more... )

Though he hoped Zero wouldn't really ruin things. He didn't need his first introduction to Society to involve a scandal. Considering he was joining the Duadenora rather than a lesser Family though, there wasn't much that the Society matrons could do to him.

He watched as Park took Zero's arm in what was supposed to look like brotherly affection, but that involved whitened knuckles on Zero's glass and a hidden wince. Park faced Gregor and said, "I'm taking Zero to some privacy and I will be right back. Promise to stay here?"Read more... )

"Whoa, head rush," he muttered, pressing the back of his thumb to his forehead briefly.

"Are you all right?" Park asked.

"I want to say no, but yes, I'm fine," Gregor said. "There's nothing you can do about my thoughts."

Park picked up a bottle of seltzer water and poured it into a glass. "Here, have a drink. I didn't realize so many people had been invited tonight. I would have at least limited the greeting line."

Gregor was introduced to so many people that their faces and names all blurred one into the next. He was grateful for the comfortable seat he was given next to the present table, which he hadn't been expecting.

Everyone coming in stopped to greet him and offer their congratulations for the Bonding. He would be handed a clear plasticene bag or box with a present inside that he would spend a few seconds "ah-ing" and "ooh-ing" over, then the present would be taken away to be arranged prettily on the table with all the others and the guest would go join the party.Read more... )

The sound of someone at the apartment door pulled him out of bed. He wrapped a robe around his aching body and stumbled to the door.

One look at Park's face and Gregor knew the man could tell the Transfer was successful. But Park didn't say anything about it so Gregor didn't have to hit him.

"Give me a minute to shower and get dressed." Gregor stepped back from the door so Park could come in. "What do we have scheduled today? More Farm work?"

"We can spend a few hours on the Farm if you'd like, but tonight is the rehearsal for the Bonding Ceremony."

Maybe it was all the time he'd spent feeding the fish, but Gregor decided to join the workers at the Farm. Park had given him a long look, then nodded agreement.

The Family Farm was located in the western section of the Duadenora compound and was protected by solid plasticrete walls and armed guards. The Farm provided nearly all of the food for the whole Family, which would have made it the perfect target of assassins looking to thin the number of Duadenora.Read more... )

The pregnancy was an open secret. His scent had changed and there was no hiding it. But until the Announcement, everyone had to pretend that nothing was different about him. Which didn't stop the extra smiles and cooing or the gooey fond looks that made him want to flee every room he was in.

Gregor constantly had to fight the sense of being overwhelmed. If he let them, they would cover him up and he would disappear into their expectations of a perfect pregnant Third. It was nothing he'd ever planned on being.Read more... )

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

After a bath that left Gregor's fingers and toes pruney, but had given him a chance for a solitary cry, he didn't know what he was supposed to do next. He paced around his suite and tried to wipe the memory of Psycher Tobin from his mind, but it was impossible. The man had looked at him and known him in a way that wouldn't let him hide. He felt scraped raw from the experience.

When he was able to push Tobin away, it was only to have his mind draw forth memories of his mother, painful and bittersweet.Read more... )
