Summary: Gregor has been living as a Two for most of his life, but it's a lie. He's really a Third. And now he's been found out and pulled into the lives of one of the great Families.

"I am a member of the Family," Park stated as though it was everyday kind of news, and to him it probably was. Gregor was shocked enough for two people. "The Family requested that I assess you for the possibility of merging your genome with the Duadenora."

"And I passed?" Gregor hadn't meant to ask, but the words had slipped out.

Park looked amused. "So far."

And now, despite himself, his biology was making itself known by wanting, craving. It gave him the sense that he was losing himself and it was only a matter of time before he was a gibbering mess and trying to crawl into Park's skin.

"How much longer do I have to be here?" he asked, trying to sound cool. His blood was burning through his veins and there was a trickle of sweat down his spine, but he refused to show how bothered he was.Read more... )

CHAPTER EIGHT

Stepping into the Nursery was a jarring experience. The youngest child there was ten years old, a towheaded boy with guileless blue eyes and bitten red lips. He was the pampered baby of the Family.

Gregor remembered a time when there had been children everywhere. People had walked around with babies cradled in their arms with no trace of fear. Now children grew up in armored prisons and those born since the Plague were as precious as any Third but rarer.Read more... )

EXCERPT:

He was a handsome stranger in painted on pants and Chuck Taylors. His dark brown hair curled around his ears in enticing tousled waves. He had rich olive skin and a straight nose with perfect nostrils. He was built in lean lines and looked like he should be an endearingly dorky guy, completely oblivious to his own good looks.

Except he walked like a predator. He tried not to, but his hips insisted on falling into their natural position when he didn't concentrate. An arrogant, rolling walk that caught and held the eye, luring in his prey.

He'd always been so well-known that he couldn't have pretended to be anyone other than himself. He was more easily recognizable than the Master. The name FAIZEL was synonymous with power and prestige. He was always near the top of every Most Wanted list the Resistance put out.

He'd always enjoyed playing with the Resistance. Hunting them down and spoiling their plans had been endlessly entertaining. It was why he'd never just completely exterminated them all the way the Master wanted.

The Master was talking synthetic blood and genocide. He had wanted a world completely devoid of normal human life. The Phageless would cease to exist and only the New Breed would remain. He wanted a world of rules and restrictions, a totalitarian empire with himself at the top.

Faizel enjoyed being powerful, but he wanted the thrill of the hunt. He was young and virile and he'd been Reborn without a soul. But he still remembered his human days and all that burning hate and rage was still there, bubbling under the surface of his skin.Read more... )

"I never tried to fool you about my identity. It was just something that happened." Tersoe sounded so defensive that Gregor wanted to laugh.

"Neither one of us was completely honest," Gregor said. "We both screwed things up," he turned to face Tersoe, "not that it matters very much."Read more... )

It felt like they were hidden for hours, days even, but that was just his sense of time getting away from him. He'd sweated through his shirt, but he was scared to take off his tuxedo jacket because waves of cold would suddenly hit him with no warning, causing him to shiver uncontrollably and he clenched his teeth to still their chattering. It was completely miserable.

At least Park had stopped asking him how he was doing, seeming to sense that the answer was about to be something unpleasant. Gregor felt like he was going to go off the rails at any moment.Read more... )

Gregor rubbed the tip of his nose. "As long as you're there, I think tomorrow will be okay."

"It will be fine," Park said. "I've been to the theater many times before and Persephone's Lament is a great mix of beautiful costumes, singing, and the dancing is fantastic."

"So you've seen it before?" Gregor cocked his head.

Park shrugged. "I was sent there in the course of my duties. I didn't get to watch the whole thing, but what I did see completely blew me away." The corners of his lips turned up when he glanced at Gregor. "I think I'm going to enjoy the opportunity to see the entire show with great company."Read more... )

Gregor looked toward Park, ignoring the way Zero spluttered beside him. "How was your trip?" he asked brightly. "Did anything interesting happen?"

Park gave him the glimmer of a smile. "Nothing that I am free to speak of to you."

Gregor pouted. "Why do you have to be so cruel to me?" He smiled at the server that appeared in front of him with a long cart carrying soup filled bowls. "You could tell me something fun," he pleaded with Park.

"There wasn't much fun going on," Park said. "I went, I saw, I came back. Nothing much happened."Read more... )

Chapter Three

Being hustled out of the hospital as precious cargo wasn't quite the slice of awesome he would have thought it would be. For one thing, he wasn't worth all the pomp and circumstance, and really wasn't feeling it at all.

Dr. Haden and his staff had done all kinds of tests on him, some a little painful and most embarrassingly invasive. Gregor had never had a complete work up because he'd never had a doctor he could trust to not turn him in.Read more... )

Gregor shook his head. "They always looked the same and the bottles never looked like they were tampered with or anything. My father was known to have a dangerous temper. I don't think there's anyone that wants to mess with him."

"We will be running a thorough physical on you," the doctor said. He pulled his com out of his pocket. "I'll make all the arrangements."Read more... )

"I know I shouldn't have been taking the suppressants, but I was scared to just stop using," he blurted. "I always heard that just stopping without having a doctor or someone to monitor you, it could be deadly. I was scared to go to Medical because it was too expensive. And I was scared they would have to report me."

Park cocked his head. "So you're rather high strung are you? Some could see that as a flaw."

Gregor shook his head. "Who cares what they think? I don't want to Bond with any of them anyway."

Park looked a bit intrigued. "Who do you want to Bond with?"

"I don't know." Gregor shrugged. "I haven't found anyone I'm interested in yet."

Park smiled, a tiny little thing, just a slight curve of the lips, but a smile nonetheless. "You are a man of discerning taste I see. A little foolish, but a person of character."

"Is there something wrong, Blessed Tierney?" she asked.

He nearly winced at the sound of the formal title coming out of her mouth. "Can I..." He paused for a breath and tried to keep his voice level. "Can I please have a different doctor? Preferably male?" He threw in that last to give himself a reason for his pickiness other than the truth.

Dr. Czernada gave him a surprised look. "Oh, oh yes, of course," she sounded as though her feelings had been hurt. She turned toward the door. "I will get you a male doctor."

"Good, thank you." Gregor pulled his blankets closer around himself. "I will be waiting here."

The minute she left the room, he started thinking furiously about what he was going to do. There weren't a lot of options though.Read more... )

He sipped the coffee, wishing for milk and sugar, but grateful for something hot to hold in his hands. He had been waiting for what had seemed like a small eternity with dread growing in his stomach. Fear of discovery had evolved from a nagging reminder to something much deeper.

Idly he wondered what they would do to him. Would he be hailed as some kind of precious find, or would he find himself locked in some bower servicing Firsts until he produced enough children for the State? The uncertainty is what bothered him the most.

Sitting in the eerie stillness of the room, with the gentle hum of the computer in the distance and the rasping wheeze of the dying woman to my left. It's a strange feeling to realize that you have to say some kind of final goodbye.

What words are you supposed to use? What thoughts needs be expressed?

"I'm lost," I whispered into the sad loneliness.

"No you're not."

I jerked in surprise and turned to see a man posed in the open the doorway, his face cast in shadow. "Who are you?" I demanded, my voice coming out weaker than I wanted.

"I am Death," he replied.

I scoffed. "Seriously. Who are you?"

"I am Death." He drifted slowly into the room. My eyes traveled down his tall, Ichabod frame. He was dressed all in black, though his boots had silver spurs. I felt a creeping chilll go up my spine. There was something about him... something that made my skin prickle and my eyes water.

"You're lying," I said, though my voice came out unsure. "Why are you here?"

"I have a job to do," he said. His face... his face was hard to see in the dimness, though his eyes burned like coals--dark with a hidden core of smouldering heat. I thought I could see the flames of Hell.

"You're scaring me." Involuntary tears trickled down my cheeks and I couldn't stop them if I tried.

"I'm sorry." He sounded so sad.

"Are you here to take my mother?" I asked, glancing at the bed across the room. I could still hear her wheezing gasps for breath. I had prayed so hard for her to stop making that sound, and now... "Please don't hurt her."

"I'm not here for her," he said. There was no warning, he was just suddenly across the room, standing so close his jacket brushed my knee. His hand was like ice on my shoulder. "I've come for you."

"Oh no..."

"Yes."

----------------------------------

The second I saw her I knew that I was desperately in love.

Long, coltish limbs and the face of a Botticelli angel framed by tumbling golden locks. She was wrapped in the costume of an innocent school girl, but with one single look I knew better.

She was a temptress. A seductress come to wrap me up in her web of feminine wiles. She would suck the life out of me like a spider and there would be nothing I could do against it. I was helpless to her, a vagrant knocking at her door to beg for the scraps of her heart and she would give me none.

The slender fingers of her left hand curled around the strap of her purple backpack while her right hand swiped her card through the reader then pushed the turnstile out of her way. She stepped through with striding footsteps, her narrow hips swaying with tomboyish charm.

She turned to wait for her friend and I was able to run my eyes over her silhouette freely. The backs of her knees begged for kisses and my fingers itched to tug her black knee socks down her slender calves and run my fingertips over the arches of her feet.

Her laughter was like molten silver as she reached out her hand to pull her friend close against her. "Come on," my angel said, turning to walk toward the train.

Our eyes caught and held for a timeless moment. Then, "What are you looking at, freak?" the moment shattered and was gone forever. Sound rushed back into the world and I was once again able to breathe.

I shrugged and turned to find the newspaper I'd wanted to buy.
